Your data's journey
What really happens when you switch on a VPN?
01Without a VPN: your request is in the open
When you open a website, the request passes through your internet provider as it is. The provider sees the name of every site you visit, and the site sees your real address.
02Encryption starts on your device
The VPN app encrypts the request before it leaves your device, so it travels as data nobody on the way can read.
03The encrypted tunnel
The request travels inside an encrypted tunnel to the VPN server. Your internet provider only sees that you are connected to a VPN server, not what you are browsing.
04The server finishes the journey
The VPN server decrypts the request and sends it on in its own name, so the website sees the server's address instead of yours.
A VPN does not make you fully anonymous: the accounts you sign in to still know who you are.

NordVPN
Among the fastest in independent reviews, with the strongest security toolkit. Our first pick for most people.
Yes. We compare official specs, features and published independent audits, with no input from the providers. We may earn a referral commission when you sign up through our links, but it never changes the scores or the ranking.
Start with what you need it for: streaming, privacy, gaming or reaching blocked sites. Each use weighs speed, servers and features differently, so we name our pick for each one rather than a single answer for everyone.
In most countries, yes. The rules differ from one country to the next, and some Gulf states punish misuse rather than the tool, so check the law where you are. Our country guides link the law texts.
Free VPNs usually limit speed, data or servers, and some live on your data. A trusted paid VPN gives you more speed, a clear audited privacy policy and real support. Proton VPN's free plan is the free option we trust.
We review the ranking every month, and update the comparison whenever an app changes in a big way or prices and offers move.
