Does FaceTime work in the UAE? What changed, and what still fails
You hit the FaceTime button on your iPhone in Dubai and the call never connects, or connects and drops. You are not imagining it.
Here is what happened to FaceTime in the UAE since 2020, what the TDRA rules say, and what people do to make the call go through.
- Fast NordLynx connections for video
- Obfuscated servers and NordWhisper
- Simple iPhone and Mac apps
- 30-day money-back guarantee

FaceTime calls are generally blocked on UAE networks, together with WhatsApp and Skype calls. iMessage works. There have been moments when FaceTime seemed to work, in 2020 and in 2021, but no official announcement ever lifted the restriction.
Can you use FaceTime in Dubai and the rest of the UAE?
On du and e& (Etisalat) connections, at home, on mobile data and on hotel Wi-Fi, FaceTime audio and video calls usually fail to connect. Telecom rules are federal, so Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates behave the same way.
iMessage, Apple's text and photo messaging, is not affected. The restriction targets real-time internet voice and video calls.
FaceTime in the UAE: what changed since 2020
MacRumors described the UAE as "a country where the FaceTime app was previously unavailable for use", because "local regulatory rules have blocked FaceTime in the UAE".
The update "appears to enable FaceTime in the United Arab Emirates", MacRumors reported, then added that "for FaceTime to work in the UAE, the iPhone needs to be set to another region". (MacRumors)
Gulf News reported that "FaceTime calls seemed to be working in the UAE", but that calls "got disconnected after a few seconds" and that "there was no official announcement on the matter". (Gulf News)
The TDRA's rules on unlicensed internet calling apps have not changed, so FaceTime calls remain unreliable at best on UAE networks.
"VoIP Services are considered Telecommunications Services" in the TDRA's words, and they must come from a licensed provider or an approved app. FaceTime is neither, so providers block it. (TDRA FAQ)
The TDRA says it is "very likely that it is illegal" to use an unlicensed app for internet voice and video calls, and that a user "may be committing a criminal offence". The VPN itself is a separate question, explained in Is a VPN legal in the UAE?
How to use FaceTime on iPhone and iPad in the UAE with a VPN
This is how people get FaceTime calls through from the UAE. Weigh it against the TDRA position above.
- 1Install a VPN on your iPhone
Get the app from the App Store and sign in. Turn on auto-connect so the VPN is up before you call.
- 2Connect to a nearby server
Choose a server in a nearby country that does not restrict calls. Closer servers keep video smooth.
- 3Call on FaceTime
Start the call as usual. If it rings but never connects, switch servers or turn on the app's obfuscation setting.
- 4Still not connecting?
Check that FaceTime is switched on in Settings and signed in with your Apple Account, then try mobile data instead of hotel Wi-Fi.

LawfulCan a free VPN handle FaceTime in the UAE?
Video calls need speed and a nearby server, which is where free plans are weakest. The free option we trust:
- An independently audited no-logs policy (Securitum, every year since 2022)
- No ads and no data cap
- The Stealth protocol, for networks that block VPNs
- One device
- Servers in 10 countries, chosen for you
- Medium speed
- No streaming services
Tips for a steady FaceTime call
A server in Europe or a nearby country beats one on another continent: shorter routes mean less echo and fewer drops.
On weak hotel or café Wi-Fi, mobile data is often steadier for a voice or video call.
Turn on the app's auto-connect and kill switch so the call never falls back to the open network halfway through.

FaceTime in the UAE: frequently asked questions
Short answers to what readers ask most. Question not here? Write to us.
FaceTime audio and video calls are generally blocked on UAE networks, like WhatsApp and Skype calls. iMessage works. Reports of FaceTime working have come and gone without any official change.
The app is on iPhones, but calls are restricted on UAE networks. In 2020 iOS 13.6 appeared to enable FaceTime in the UAE, yet MacRumors reported it only worked with the iPhone set to another region.
The TDRA treats internet voice and video calls as a licensed telecom service. FaceTime is not a licensed provider in the UAE, and the TDRA requires internet providers to block unlicensed calling services.
Dubai follows the same federal telecom rules as the rest of the UAE, so FaceTime calls generally fail there on local networks and hotel Wi-Fi.
With a VPN connected to a server abroad, the call travels inside an encrypted tunnel. The TDRA says using unlicensed calling apps is very likely illegal, so weigh that before relying on it.
