Do WhatsApp calls work in Oman? What changed, and what the TRA says

Oman's TRA says it does not ban WhatsApp outright and regulates calling apps through licensing. Since December 2024 many users report WhatsApp calls working without a VPN, but there was no official announcement, and calls can still fail on some connections.
Do WhatsApp calls work in Oman right now?
In December 2024, Times of Oman reported that "WhatsApp users in Oman reported that they were able to make audio and video calls through the app" without a VPN, adding that the TRA "has not officially announced any regulatory changes enabling the feature". (Times of Oman)
Because nothing was announced, nothing guarantees it: a call that works on one network or Wi-Fi connection can fail on another.

What to do when a WhatsApp call won't connect in Oman

Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or the other way round: results differ between networks.

Make sure the app is current. Older versions fail more often on restricted networks.

If calls still fail, connect to a nearby server outside Oman so the call travels inside an encrypted tunnel.
