Best VPN for unblocking websites and apps in 2026
A site that will not load, an app that stops working, a service that says it is not available in your country. These blocks come from different places, and a VPN only beats them if it is built for it.
We compared the seven VPNs we review on obfuscation and server spread, the two things that decide whether a VPN gets through.
- Obfuscated servers and NordWhisper
- 7,200+ servers in 225 locations
- No-logs reviewed by PwC, then Deloitte
- 30-day money-back guarantee

Three kinds of block, and what beats each
Your provider or your country blocks a site or app. A VPN tunnels around it, and obfuscation helps when the network also blocks VPNs.
A streaming service or website only serves some countries. A server in the right country fixes it.
Office, school or hotel Wi-Fi blocks some sites. A VPN encrypts your traffic past the filter, but follow the network's rules.
How a VPN gets around a block
Most blocks look at your IP address or at the names of the sites you ask for. A VPN changes both.
- 1Your IP address changes
Websites see the VPN server's address, so a site that blocks your country lets you in through a server elsewhere.
- 2Your traffic is encrypted
Your provider sees only a connection to the VPN server, so it cannot pick out the blocked site.
- 3The VPN answers the site's name
Its own DNS replies, so a DNS block does not work either.
- 4Obfuscation hides the VPN itself
On networks that block VPNs, it makes the connection look like ordinary encrypted web traffic. All the VPNs here except CyberGhost list it.

Tips to stay connected
When blocks start, provider websites can be hard to reach. Get the app from the official store in advance.
If the VPN will not connect, switch to the obfuscated servers, Stealth or NordWhisper.
Blocks are often uneven: another server or protocol may get through.
Try it before you commit
Whether a VPN gets through depends on your network, so test it on your own connection.

NordVPN, for obfuscated servers, the NordWhisper protocol and a large network. Surfshark is the value alternative, with obfuscated servers and unlimited devices.
Some networks recognise VPN traffic and block it. Obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as ordinary web traffic, so choose a VPN that has it.
