Best VPN for streaming: a guide for each service
Your friends abroad watch shows you cannot find. When you travel, your own subscription suddenly shows a different catalogue. Streaming services license content country by country.
Here is how that works, which VPNs stream reliably, and a guide for each service.

Services buy the rights to each title country by country, then show you the catalogue of the country your internet address points to.
Connected to a server in another country, you appear to browse from there, so the service shows that country's catalogue.
Services detect and block known VPN servers. Fast providers with regularly renewed servers get through more often.

Streaming services license their catalogues country by country, and their terms tie your account to a country. Netflix's own Terms of Use say you may watch "primarily within the country in which you have established your account" and that "the content that may be available will vary by geographic location". A VPN changes the location the service sees. It does not change those terms, so read them for your service.
Tips for smooth streaming
4K needs a fast, steady connection: pick a server not too far from the catalogue's country.
After changing server, clear the app or browser cache so the service reads your new location.
Many TVs cannot run VPN apps: use the provider's TV app, a VPN-ready router or the smart DNS some providers offer.

Short answers to what readers ask most. Question not here? Write to us.
ExpressVPN is our first pick for streaming, the most consistent across services in independent reviews. NordVPN and CyberGhost, with its dedicated streaming servers, are strong alternatives.
Not to watch your own country's catalogue. A VPN helps when you travel and want the catalogue of the country where your account is, and it protects you on public Wi-Fi.
Services detect many VPN servers and block them. Try another server in the same country, clear the app's cache, or pick a VPN that streaming reviews rate highly.
Using a VPN is legal in most countries, but the services' terms tie your account to a country. Netflix's terms say you may watch primarily in the country where you set up your account.
