Best VPN for privacy in 2026: what each provider lets you check

Every VPN says it protects your privacy. Not every one lets you check. The difference is in the audits, the owner, the country it answers to and what it has told the public about government requests.

We compared the seven VPNs we review on exactly those points, from their own pages.

02

What makes a VPN private

An audited no-logs policy

A named firm and a date. Six of the seven VPNs we review have one. Hotspot Shield does not.

Jurisdiction

Switzerland, Panama and the British Virgin Islands sit outside the main intelligence-sharing alliances. The Netherlands and the United States do not.

RAM-only servers

Servers that keep nothing on disk lose everything when they restart. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost and PIA say all theirs are RAM-only.

Transparency reports

Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, PIA and CyberGhost publish what they were asked for and what they handed over.

03

What the transparency reports say

The providers' own statements, not court records, but specific.

Proton VPN

458 legally binding Swiss orders since 2017, all of which it says it denied, 47 of them in the first half of 2026.

Since 2017
ExpressVPN

137 government and legal requests and 3 warrants from January to June 2026, none leading to user data.

Jan to Jun 2026
Private Internet Access

No logs produced for any request in the second quarter of 2026, and none to give when subpoenaed in 2016 and 2017.

Q2 2026
Surfshark

23 government inquiries and no warrants from July to September 2026.

Jul to Sep 2026

How to choose a VPN for privacy

  1. 1
    Check the audit

Look for the auditor's name and the year, not only a no-logs badge.

  2. 2
    Check the owner

Know which company runs it, and which other brands it owns.

  3. 3
    Turn on the kill switch

So nothing leaks if the VPN drops.

  4. 4
    Prefer open-source apps

Proton VPN and PIA publish their apps' code, so others can check what they do.

05

Proton VPN or NordVPN for privacy?

Proton VPN has the strongest privacy setup. NordVPN is faster, with RAM-only servers and five no-logs reviews since 2018.

FAQ

Best VPN for privacy: frequently asked questions

Short answers to what readers ask most. Question not here? Write to us.

Proton VPN: Swiss-based, owned by the non-profit Proton Foundation, with a no-logs policy audited by Securitum every year from 2022 to 2026 and open-source apps.

An independent firm checks the provider's claim that it keeps no records of your activity, and names itself and the date. A no-logs promise without an audit is only a promise.

It decides which courts can order the provider to hand over data. Proton VPN reports 458 legally binding Swiss orders since 2017, all of which it says it denied, and PIA says it produced no logs when subpoenaed in 2016 and 2017.

Rarely. Proton VPN's free plan is the exception we trust, because paid plans fund it and its no-logs policy is audited.

No. It hides your traffic from your network and your IP address from websites, but the accounts you sign in to still know who you are.
