Private Internet Access (PIA) offers open-source, highly configurable apps at a budget price, with servers in more than 100 countries. Who is Private Internet Access for?
- You like control: open-source apps, deep settings, a budget price and unlimited devices.
- Its US base worries you, or you want streaming that works without trying a few servers.
Private Internet Access speed, apps and safety
PIA fully supports WireGuard and OpenVPN (with 128- or 256-bit encryption), with settings that let you balance speed and security by hand. Performance is generally good, but streaming reliability varies from server to server, so you may need to try more than one. An obfuscation setting makes VPN traffic look like regular browsing.
Open-source, customisable apps for all the main platforms (the code is on GitHub), unlimited simultaneous devices, an advanced kill switch and options that technical users appreciate.
Although PIA is based in the US, Deloitte reviewed its no-logs policy in 2022, 2024 and 2025, and all its servers run on RAM only. PIA says subpoenas for user logs in 2016 and 2017 found no logs to hand over. Its quarterly transparency report shows it produced logs in none of the requests of Q2 2026.
